Pedestal sinks feature a lavatory
basin that is positioned at a comfortable standing height and rests
on a pedestal base.
They're perfect for a half bath, where a vanity would
overwhelm the limited space." Trading the typical
bathroom cabinet and vanity for a retro vitreous china pedestal sink
- a great choice for the guest bath, which demands little to no
storage - makes for a memorable room. Also, consider
over-the-counter sinks, wall-mounted bowls and free-standing pieces,
made from or made to look like new or antique furniture.
The first pedestal sinks were made of enameled
cast iron. By 1915, however, manufacturers began to fabricate them
using vitreous china, a glasslike porcelain that is shaped more
easily than cast iron. These glazed clay pieces bake for 40 hours in
a 2,200-degree kiln to ensure that the surfaces are smooth and
non-porous.
When selecting a sink, it's important to make sure
that it's compatible with your faucet. Sinks are drilled for faucets
with a distance of either 4-inches (centerset) or 8 - 12-inches
(widespread) between the hot and cold faucet handles. Centerset
drillings will accommodate most single-control faucets with
escutcheons. Many sinks are also offered with centered single-hole
drillings to accommodate single-hole faucets. Some sinks do not have
faucet drillings -- the faucet is mounted directly on the countertop
or on the wall.
